Where to find solace among friends and family

Booking a vacation rental for a large crowd can help with congestion over a week and allow more space and convenience for those that come from a far.

We often don’t think of vacation rentals for more than just a family vacation but vacation rentals are nice for other reasons too. Have you thought about a vacation rental for these occasions?

  • Small lakeside wedding
  • Vowel renewal
  • Family reunion
  • Corporate retreat
  • Leadership conference
  • Girl’s week (the guys get one every fall, don’t they?)
  • Meditation retreat
  • Babymoon

When renting a vacation rental, it is always best to weigh your options. Do you want the whole group at once or coming in spurts? Is there ample parking? Are there enough things to do for the whole group? Can the kitchen accommodate the needs of the group?

The Conger Collection offer many larger vacation rentals that provide ample room, tranquil settings, unique amenities and more.  The newest addition to their vacation rental homes is the Mishpocheh. This secluded home sits on 3 wooded acres on a semi-private bay, with 250 feet of sandy shoreline. The loft is a perfect place for kids to sleep and all three floors overlook Yellow Birch Lake and forest (superb when the leaves turn ravishing red and blaze orange in the fall).

Mishpocheh, pronounced “mish-POKH-ah,” literally translates to “family” but often means “extended family, close friends, and then some,” which is just what this spacious family retreat will offer you and your guests.

Mishpocheh has a covered boat dock, full kitchen, AC, Wi-Fi, private beach, lakeside fire pit, and more on site amenities. This home is also walking distance from the Eagle River Championship golf course, minutes away from downtown shopping and fine dining. One hint we might provide…When totalling up the total cost of rental, divide this up between groups that are coming for a more final estimate. It is cheaper than you think! Things to Do in the Dodgeville, WI Area

  • A popular recreational activity in the Dodgeville area is biking along the Military Ridge Trail which is just a few miles from the property. The trail was once a railroad track and has since been converted to a gorgeous bike trail.
  • Located less than 20 miles from the cabin is Cave of the Mounds. It’s the perfect day trip for all ages and is open year round! The beautiful cave was accidentally discovered in August 4, 1939 when workers blasted into it in their search for limestone. Because of all the hype and excitement, the cave was opened about a year later for visitors. In the following 8 weeks after the opening, over 59,000 visitors came to check out the cave. Since this, more and more are coming from all regions to check out this natural beauty.
  • Travelers visit Governor Dodge State Park for biking, biking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, boating, and much more. Take an afternoon to enjoy the park or return each day – there is so much to see and enjoy all in one area.

Campfire Cooking: Gathering Around the Fire for Dinner

It’s a Wisconsin tradition to head down to the crackling campfire at dusk. The roasting fire keeps everyone warm during cool evenings. Campfire songs and stories are shared, and who could forget the s’mores? It is a classic Wisconsin experience! Although many forget that a s’more an occasional hot dog aren’t the only open-flame-friendly food.

Tasty & simple campfire meals

Shish Kabobs

  1. Chop chicken or beef and vegetables: onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes (even pineapple)
  2. Slid the pieces onto a wooden or metal skewer
  3. Add salt, pepper, or a marinade
  4. Cook over open fire until the vegetables are soften and the meat is cooked through (about 15-20 min.)

Campfire potatoes

  1. Cut potatoes into slices
  2. Feel free to add chopped onion, bacon bits, garlic, butter, or other seasonings
  3. Wrap the food well in aluminum foil
  4. Place the wrapped potatoes in the fire on the coals
  5. The time will depend on the strength of the fire and potatoes size (expect around 30-45 min.)

Pudgy Pies – invest in a pudgy pie iron, many can be found for $15-$25

  1. Butter 2 slices of bread and place one on the iron, butter side down
  2. The add your ingredients –  this is were the creativity comes into play! Some enjoy a simple ham and cheese pie, others make a pizza pie (pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni), or even a breakfast pie (egg, cheese, and ham)
  3. Take the other buttered slice of bread and place the buttered side up so it touches the iron
  4. Cook the pie much like a marshmallow – remembering to rotate the iron (can take just 1 min. to cook, but depends on fire)

Cooking a pudgy pie over open fire

Here’s my challenge to you: next time you’re around gathered around the campfire, try something new. Just remember to not forget about the  s’more — it’s a classic for a reason.

Summer of Fresh, Locally Grown Fruit in Wisconsin

Snack guilt-free this summer with fresh blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and much more. Make sure you visit a local grower this summer.  One can expect strawberries to be ripe between June and mid July, raspberries from early July to August, and blueberries from late July to early September. Call ahead because peak seasons vary from year to year.

When and How to Pick

The best time to pick berries is either in the morning or evening when the sun is setting. This is so the sun does not soften the berries so they are easier to pick. When picking the berries, use both hands. One hand will be used to hold the branch while the other takes the berry. Pick only fully ripe berries and keep the stems on the fruit.
